How to edit a PDF online

The PDF Editor works like a simple drawing layer on top of your document. You can change words that are already in the PDF, add new content, and download a clean, edited copy.

  1. Open your PDF. In the PDF Editor, click Open PDF or drag the file onto the editor. All pages appear on screen.
  2. Change existing text. Choose Edit text, then click any line of text. The old words are covered with a matching background colour and a text box appears with the same words, ready for you to type.
  3. Add new text or images. Choose Add text and click where the text should go, or use Add image to place a logo, photo or signature. Drag items to move them and use the corner handle to resize.
  4. Hide anything you do not need. Choose Whiteout / Remove and drag a box over a logo, phone number, old date or any other content. Tick New boxes on all pages to cover the same spot on every page.
  5. Download. Click Download edited PDF. Your edited file is saved to your device with “-edited” added to its name.

You can also add your own watermark from the side panel: type text such as “CONFIDENTIAL” or choose an image, then set the size, colour, opacity, rotation and position (centre or tiled). The watermark is applied to every page when you download.

Editing PDF text in Hindi, Urdu and other languages

Many free PDF editors only support English letters. IrfanEdu’s editor includes Google’s open-source Noto fonts for Indian and world languages, so joined letters and vowel signs (for example क्ष, कि and कृ in Hindi, or connected letters in Urdu) are drawn correctly in the downloaded PDF.

Language or scriptFont used
Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, SanskritNoto Sans Devanagari
Urdu, Arabic, PersianNoto Naskh Arabic
Bengali, AssameseNoto Sans Bengali
Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Gujarati, OdiaNoto Sans Gurmukhi, Gujarati, Oriya
Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, MalayalamNoto Sans Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam
English, European languages, Greek, RussianHelvetica, Times, Courier, Noto Sans, Noto Serif
Hebrew, ThaiNoto Sans Hebrew, Noto Sans Thai

You do not need to pick the font yourself: when you type in Hindi, Urdu or another supported script, the editor switches to the right font automatically. To use a different font (for example your school’s or company’s font, or a Chinese or Japanese font), click Upload your font (.ttf / .otf) in the side panel.

How to convert images to PDF

There are two image tools, depending on what you need:

  • Image to PDF turns every image into a separate PDF. If you choose several images, you get one ZIP file containing all the PDFs.
  • Combine Images into One PDF puts all your images into a single PDF, one image per page. Use the up and down arrows to set the page order.
  1. Click Choose images or drag your photos onto the box. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP are supported.
  2. Choose a page size (A4, US Letter, US Legal or the same size as the image), the orientation and the margin. Auto orientation makes wide images landscape and tall images portrait.
  3. Click Convert to PDF or Create PDF. The file downloads straight away.

Phone photos are rotated correctly, even when the camera stored the picture sideways. This makes the combine tool a quick way to turn photos of notes, receipts or assignment pages into one neat PDF.

How to convert PDF to Word

Choose a PDF, pick one of the two modes and click Convert to Word. The .docx file opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, WPS Office and LibreOffice.

ModeBest forWhat you get
Editable textLetters, notes, reports, assignments and other text documentsReal, editable paragraphs. Headings keep their larger size, and bold and italic text stays bold and italic. Each PDF page starts on a new Word page.
Keep exact lookScanned PDFs, forms, posters and complex layoutsEach page is placed in Word as a high-quality picture, so it looks exactly like the PDF. The text is not editable.

If the PDF is a scan (a photo of paper), it contains no real text, so the tool will ask you to use Keep exact look.

How to remove a watermark from a PDF

Watermarks are added to PDFs in different ways. The Watermark Remover looks for all common types and removes the actual watermark objects instead of simply painting over them:

  • Watermark layers added by Adobe Acrobat and many other PDF programs.
  • Watermark and stamp annotations, such as “Approved” or “Draft” stamps.
  • Diagonal or rotated text, such as “SAMPLE”, “COPY” or “CONFIDENTIAL” printed across the page.
  • Repeated images or logos that appear on every page.
  • Any text you type, when the watermark is ordinary straight text.
  1. Choose your PDF. The tool analyses it and ticks the watermark types it finds.
  2. Check the preview. Use Prev and Next to look at other pages, and tick or untick options until only the watermark is gone.
  3. Click Download cleaned PDF.

Please use this tool responsibly. Only remove watermarks from documents that you created or that you have permission to change. Removing a watermark from someone else’s copyrighted material may break copyright law and the owner’s terms.

If the watermark is part of a scanned image, it cannot be separated from the page. In that case, open the PDF Editor and cover it with the Whiteout / Remove tool. Auto colour matches the box to the page background.

How to split a PDF

Choose a PDF and the tool shows a thumbnail of every page. Click pages to select them, or type page numbers yourself.

Split modeExampleResult
Extract selected pages into one PDF1-3, 5, 8-10One PDF with pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10

Tip: “5-” means page 5 to the last page, and “-3” means pages 1 to 3.

Is it safe? How your files stay private

Most online PDF websites upload your file to their server, process it there and then ask you to download the result. IrfanEdu’s tools work differently: the processing code runs inside your own browser, so your PDF, images and text never leave your device. We cannot see, store or share your documents, which makes these tools a good choice for mark sheets, ID copies, bills, contracts and other private papers. The full details are in the privacy policy for these tools below.

Tips and known limitations

  • Use an up-to-date browser. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Samsung Internet all work.
  • Very large files (hundreds of pages or more than about 100 MB) may be slow on older phones, because your own device does the work. A laptop or desktop is faster for big files.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first with the password, using the program that created them.
  • Edited text uses the editor’s fonts. When you change existing text, the new words use the closest available font (sans, serif, monospace or a language font), not the exact original font.
  • PDF to Word works best with simple layouts. Tables and multi-column pages become plain paragraphs in Editable text mode. Use Keep exact look when the layout matters more than editing.
  • An internet connection is needed to load the tools and fonts. Your files themselves are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF editor really free?

Yes. All six tools are completely free with no sign-up, no trial period, no limit on the number of files and no watermark added to your output.

Are my files uploaded to your server?

No. Your PDFs and images are processed inside your own web browser and are never uploaded to IrfanEdu or anyone else. Closing or refreshing the page removes them from memory.

Can I edit the existing text in a PDF?

Yes. In the PDF Editor choose Edit text and click any line. The original words are covered with the background colour and you can type the new text in an editable box, then move, resize or restyle it.

Can I type in Hindi, Urdu or other Indian languages?

Yes. The editor supports Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and more. It switches to the correct Noto font automatically, and you can also upload your own .ttf or .otf font.

Do these PDF tools work on mobile phones?

Yes. All tools work in mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. The editor fits the page to your screen and supports touch for moving and resizing items.

How do I remove a watermark from a PDF?

Open the Watermark Remover, choose your PDF and check the preview. The tool automatically detects watermark layers, stamp annotations, diagonal text and repeated logos. Untick anything you want to keep, then click Download cleaned PDF.

Why was my watermark not removed?

If the PDF is a scanned image, the watermark is part of the picture and cannot be separated from it. Open the PDF Editor and cover the watermark with the Whiteout / Remove tool instead.

How do I convert several images into one PDF?

Use Combine Images into One PDF. Choose all your images, arrange them with the up and down arrows, pick the page size and margin, and click Create PDF.

Will PDF to Word keep my formatting?

Editable text mode keeps paragraphs, text sizes, bold, italic and page breaks, but tables and columns become plain paragraphs. Keep exact look mode preserves the appearance of every page exactly, but the text is not editable.

How do I split a PDF into separate pages?

Open Split PDF, choose your file and select Every page as a separate PDF. You will get a ZIP file containing one PDF for each page. You can also extract chosen pages or split every N pages.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF?

No. Protected PDFs must first be unlocked with their password in the program that created them. After that, you can edit, split or convert them here.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, because your own device does the processing. Most phones handle files up to about 100 MB comfortably. Very large files are faster on a laptop or desktop.
