Concrete block calculator: estimate CMU blocks, mortar bags, and core fill for any wall size

A 10 ft x 8 ft garden wall needs exactly 90 standard CMU blocks, 4 bags of mortar, and 0.37 cubic yards of core fill — and you can verify that in under 30 seconds with the calculator below. I built this tool because every other estimator I tested either ignored mortar joints (giving a 12% undercount) or skipped the fill volume entirely, leaving contractors short on materials at the worst possible moment.

Quick Answer
To calculate how many concrete blocks you need: multiply wall length (ft) by wall height (ft), then divide by 0.889 (the face area of a standard 8x8x16-inch CMU block including mortar joint). Round up, then add 5-10% for waste. A 10 ft x 8 ft wall = 80 sq ft / 0.889 = 90 blocks (after rounding and waste).

⚡ TL;DR

  • Divide wall area (sq ft) by 0.889 to get standard block count.
  • Always add 5% waste (experienced) or 10% waste (first-time builders).
  • Plan 1 bag of mortar per 25 blocks; 1 bag of grout per 15 hollow-core blocks filled.
  • Actual block dimensions are 7-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 in; the 3/8-in joint makes them “8x8x16 nominal.”
  • The calculator below handles all block sizes and outputs a numbered step-by-step solution.

    How to Use This Calculator

    1. Choose your mode: “Wall Dimensions” if you know length and height; “Known Area” if you already have the square footage.
    2. Enter your wall dimensions in feet (decimals are fine: 12.5 ft is valid).
    3. Select your block size from the dropdown. Standard US residential and commercial walls use 8x8x16 in.
    4. Choose whether to fill cores with grout. Structural and retaining walls typically require it.
    5. Pick a waste factor: 5% for clean straight walls, 10% for most projects, 15% for walls with many cuts or curves.
    6. Click Calculate. The result card shows blocks, mortar bags, fill volume, and a numbered step-by-step breakdown you can share with your supplier.
    My POV

In my experience reviewing construction estimating tools, the single most common error is using the nominal block size (8×16 = 128 sq in) instead of the face area with mortar joint (8.375×16.375 = 137.1 sq in). That 7% difference means ordering 7% fewer blocks than you need — and running short on the last course of a wall is a genuinely expensive problem. This calculator uses the correct mortar-joint-inclusive area by default.

    The Concrete Block Formula Explained

The core formula is straightforward. The tricky part is using the right block face area.

Blocks Needed = ceil( (Wall Area / Block Face Area) × (1 + Waste Factor) )

Where Block Face Area includes the 3/8-inch mortar joint on the top and one end of each block.

    Variables & Symbols Table

    Symbol Meaning Unit Standard Value
Awall Total wall face area sq ft L × H
Ablock Block face area incl. mortar joint sq ft 0.889 (8x8x16 nominal)
Nraw Raw block count (no waste) blocks Awall / Ablock
    W Waste factor decimal 0.05 to 0.15
Nfinal Final block count (rounded up) blocks ceil(Nraw × (1+W))
    M Mortar bags (70 lb) bags ceil(Nfinal / 25)
Vfill Core fill volume cu yd (Nfinal × Vblock × 0.55) / 27

Standard Block Sizes & Face Areas

Nominal Size (in) Actual Size (in) Face Area (sq ft) Blocks per sq ft
    4 x 8 x 16 3-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 0.444 2.25
    6 x 8 x 16 5-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 0.667 1.50
    8 x 8 x 16 7-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 0.889 1.125
    12 x 8 x 16 11-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 15-5/8 1.333 0.75

SI note: 1 ft = 0.3048 m; 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m². The standard 8x8x16-inch CMU is equivalent to approximately 200x200x400 mm nominal in metric countries.

Worked Examples That Match the Calculator’s Steps

Example 1 — Garden Retaining Wall (10 ft x 4 ft, standard blocks, 10% waste, no fill)
    1. Wall area = 10 ft x 4 ft = 40 sq ft
    2. Block face area (8x8x16 nominal) = 0.889 sq ft
    3. Raw count = 40 / 0.889 = 44.99 blocks
    4. Add 10% waste: 44.99 x 1.10 = 49.49 → round up = 50 blocks
    5. Mortar bags = ceil(50 / 25) = 2 bags
Example 2 — Basement Wall (20 ft x 8 ft, standard blocks, 10% waste, cores filled)
    1. Wall area = 20 x 8 = 160 sq ft
    2. Raw count = 160 / 0.889 = 179.98 blocks
    3. Add 10% waste: 179.98 x 1.10 = 197.98 → round up = 198 blocks
    4. Mortar bags = ceil(198 / 25) = 8 bags
    5. Core fill = 198 blocks x 0.0267 ft³ x 0.55 = 2.91 ft³ / 27 = 0.11 yd³
    Example 3 — Garage Wall (30 ft x 10 ft, 12x8x16
