Figure out square feet flooring: free calculator + shingles guide

Most guides tell you to “just multiply length by width.” That is correct — but it is only half the answer. The part they skip is what actually causes people to run short at the hardware store: waste factor, irregular rooms, and the roofing-square-to-bundle conversion. I have seen homeowners buy 10% too little and make a second trip, or 30% too much and waste hundreds of dollars.
This calculator handles all of it. Enter your room dimensions, pick a waste factor, and get total square footage, roofing squares, and bundles of shingles in one step.
To figure out square feet for flooring, multiply length by width in feet (Area = L x W). Add all rooms together, then add 10% waste for straight-lay or 15% for diagonal. One roofing square = 100 sq ft. A standard bundle of 3-tab shingles covers ~33.3 sq ft, so one square needs 3 bundles. Architectural shingles typically need 4 bundles per square.
- Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) x Width (ft) — measure every room separately.
- Always add a waste factor: 10% straight lay, 15% diagonal, 20% complex cuts.
- One roofing square = exactly 100 sq ft of surface area.
- Standard 3-tab shingles: 3 bundles per square (~33.3 sq ft each).
- Architectural/dimensional shingles: typically 4 bundles per square (~25 sq ft each).
- For L-shaped rooms, split into rectangles and add the areas together.

How to use this calculator
The calculator has three modes. Pick the one that matches your project:
- Single room: Enter length and width in feet, choose a waste factor, click Calculate.
- Multi-room: Enter each room separately (up to 5). Use this for L-shaped rooms — split the shape into two rectangles and enter them as two rooms.
- Shingles / roofing: Enter your total roof area and the coverage per bundle from your product label. The calculator converts to roofing squares and total bundles.
The step-by-step solution shows exactly how the number was reached, so you can double-check it before you order.
What is a square foot, and what is a roofing square?
A square foot is a unit of area equal to a 1-foot by 1-foot square — 144 square inches. A roofing square is a contractor unit equal to exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers quote prices and order materials by the square because it is a convenient round number for large surfaces.
The two terms are easy to confuse. If a roofer says your roof is “18 squares,” that means 1,800
